How to bundle sign shop services so buyers see the value right away

Package sign shop services by grouping the work buyers already ask for, pricing each bundle on materials, labor and margin, and naming what is inside.

What to take away

  • A bundle is a named group of sign shop work a buyer recognizes, not a discount on your full catalog.
  • Build each package from jobs you already quotestorefront, vehicle, interior, and maintenance.
  • Price a bundle from direct costsubstrate, vinyl, LED modules, labor hours, crew time. Add sales tax, then apply margin.
  • Publish what the package includes and what it excludes, so the first quote does not become a negotiation.
  • Give every package one owner and a reorder point for the materials it consumes.

A bundle sells because the buyer can picture it. "Storefront package" tells a dentist what she gets. "Full-service signage solutions" tells her nothing.

Most shops already do this work. They just quote it one line at a time, which forces the buyer to assemble the package themselves.

Four packages that fit most independent shops

Storefront package

A fascia sign, a window graphic, and an hours decal. Fabrication in acrylic or aluminum, cut vinyl applied on site. Suits a first retail location or a tenant moving into a shell space.

Grimco and N. Glantz & Son stock 0.040 inch aluminum and Plaskolite OPTIX acrylic in 4 ft by 8 ft sheets. A shop can cut a fascia from either.

The buyer's question is permitting. Check zoning and the landlord's sign criteria before you quote, and refer the answer to the municipal building department. Never promise an approval you do not control.

An illuminated fascia needs a UL 48 listed sign body, and the wiring behind it falls under NEC Article 600. That work goes to a licensed electrician, and the permit fee is a pass-through.

Vehicle package

Two door decals, a rear panel, and a set of magnetic panels for a second vehicle. Cut vinyl for flat panels, cast film for curves. Suits service trades with one to three trucks.

3M IJ180Cv3 and Avery Dennison SW900 are cast films that hold a curve or a rivet. Oracal 651 calendared vinyl covers flat door panels for less. As of 2026, cast film typically runs $0.90 to $1.40 per square foot from a sign distributor, and calendared film $0.35 to $0.70.

Magnetic panels from Magnum Magnetics come as 0.030 inch or 0.060 inch sheeting. Both are made to go on and come off, so write the removal rule into the package terms.

Cast film costs more than calendared. Say so in the package description, because a door decal that lifts at the edge in August is a callback you eat.

Interior package

A lobby logo, a directional set, and a wall graphic. Acrylic letters, printed panels, or cut vinyl on painted drywall. Suits clinics, gyms, and offices with a reception area.

Gemini cuts dimensional acrylic and metal letters to order. Printed panels usually go on 3 mm or 6 mm PVC; a 4 ft by 8 ft sheet of 3 mm typically runs $50 to $90 from a distributor, and 6 mm costs more.

Measure the wall before you quote. A logo sized to a photo is a return trip with a trailer.

Maintenance package

An annual inspection, lamp or module replacement, and a cleaning visit. Priced per sign per year. Suits any customer with an illuminated sign they cannot reach.

SloanLED and Principal LED modules are common retrofits, and most drop into a channel letter or a cabinet in place of fluorescent lamps and a ballast. In most US markets, an annual contract typically runs $250 to $600 per illuminated sign, and a single service call $150 to $350.

This is the package that keeps revenue moving in a slow month. Set a reorder point for the LED modules and ballast you stock for it.

How to price a bundle without guessing

Add the direct costs first:

2026 pricing figures

  • $65-$110fabrication shop rate per hour
  • $85-$150two-person install crew per hour
  • 1.6-2.2common margin factor on direct cost

Write it as arithmetic you can reuse:

package price = (materials + labor hours x shop rate + crew hours x crew rate) x margin factor

Substitute your own figures. No published benchmark fits your rent, your equipment, or your market.

As of 2026, shop rates in most US markets typically run $65 to $110 an hour for fabrication and $85 to $150 an hour for a two-person install crew. A margin factor of 1.6 to 2.2 on direct cost is a common range for custom signage. Site visits and permit administration push a bundle toward the top of it.

Do not judge a package by margin percentage alone. A storefront package at a thin percentage may still beat a wrap at a fat one, because it uses fewer crew hours and less of the printer.

What to publish with each package

  • The named components, in the buyer's words
  • What is not included, such as permits, electrical work, or removal of an old sign
  • The measurement or site visit required before the price is firm
  • The lead time, split into fabrication and installation
  • The permit pathwho files, who pays, and which office rules
  • Who to call when something needs fixing

The exclusions list prevents most disputes. Advertising claims must be truthful and supported, and endorsements must reflect honest experience, per the Federal Trade Commission guide to advertising.

The sign shop services and packages guide covers the wider offer structure these four packages sit inside.

Capacity decides which package you push

Every package leans on one scarce thing: a wide-format printer such as the HP Latex 700W or a Roland TrueVIS, a CNC router such as the ShopBot PRSalpha, the laminator, the install crew, or your own approval time.

The HP Latex 700W prints up to 64 inches wide with water-based ink. A routed aluminum panel ties up a CNC table for hours.

Model each package through an ordinary week, then through a week with a permit delay and a sick installer. The package that survives both is the one to promote.

Contribution per constrained hour starts the conversation. It does not end it.

When you quote the work itself, pricing sign shop services for a fair margin walks through the line items.

Records and safety

Keep the documents behind purchases, sales, payroll, and assets. Any system works if it clearly shows income and expenses, per the IRS records guidance.

For shop hazards, ergonomics, and program guidance, start with the OSHA printing industry page.

Two refusals worth writing into the package terms. No electrical wiring, structural mounting, or crane work: those go to a licensed electrician, a structural engineer, and crews working to OSHA 1926. No permit interpretation: that goes to the authority having jurisdiction.

Common questions

What separates a package from a discount?

A package names a group of work and states what it includes. A discount cuts the price of the same work. Buyers compare packages on scope, and they compare discounts on price alone.

How many packages should a small shop offer?

Three or four. Each one needs an owner, a price sheet, and stocked materials. More than that and your reorder points and lead times stop being reliable.

What if a customer wants only part of a package?

Quote the parts at list price and show the package price beside it. The gap is the value of buying the group, and the buyer can see it without a speech.

Does the package price include the permit fee?

No. List permits as a pass-through. A storefront sign permit typically runs $50 to $300 in most US markets, and an electrical permit is separate.
